![]() Facelift Surgery in South FloridaAs people age, their face naturally sags compared to where it used to be when they were younger. This is completely normal. If they were to pull on their face slightly, they would notice that their eyes will open more, their facial lines will lessen and quite a bit of the other sagging will lessen. The facelift procedure permanently tightens areas affected by skin laxity. Dr. Blane Shatkin offers facelift surgery as a service to his Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Weston patients. Why Patients Undergo Facelifts? The goal of a facelift (technical term: rhytidectomy) is simple: to conquer the effect gravity has had on a face. As we age, the fat cells, tissues and muscles under the skin begin to shrink and weaken. Without firmness and strength to hold it up, the skin gives way to gravity and begins to sag. In addition, years of smiling and frowning have set the skin into creases from which it can no longer bounce back as it loses elasticity. Even facial bones can thin and change shape. Finally, falling fat begins to collect in the skin by the jaw line. How is the Facelift Procedure Performed? The basis of a simple face lift is to raise everything up to where it was before. It involves much more than stretching out the skin. An incision from the temple to behind the ear allows the surgeon to peel back the skin and gently pull muscles and tissues back into place. Fat is removed or rearranged, often with micro-liposuction. The skin naturally follows, as Dr. Shatkin smoothes it back on and excises the excess. The incisions, except for a tiny one under the chin, are hidden behind the hairline. Complementary or Alternative Treatment OptionsA face lift primarily improves the neck, chin, mouth and cheeks, that is, the lower face. A forehead lift or blepharoplasty for improvement of the brow, forehead and eyes is separate. Dr. Blane Shatkin can use microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing, along with the face lift to rid the skin of fine lines and discoloration, which also make a person look older. During the microdermabrasion procedure, Dr. Shatkin uses a tool to rub tiny crystals over the skin, which polish, refine and increase elasticity, a major help for stretched out cells. People usually need between six and twelve treatments. Laser skin resurfacing uses a laser remove a layer of skin, taking imperfections with it. It usually works well, but there are dangers of permanent discoloration to those with darker skin. A healing period of about two weeks is needed afterward, about the same as after a face lift.
